The wanton sales of these properties and the inapropriate use of the proceeds had become a concern to Dr. Prempeh who had gotten involved first hand in these situations when his consultancy has to be developing the physical plans/maps of these new areas that were being sold.
Land ownership in Africa largely lies in with clan and community leaders, not the government, He therefore realised it is time for a focus to be on these leaders of the very poor communities who had enough to manage to bring development to their areas, yet were mismanaging them whilst crying for governement and foreign aid.
These very leaders were the custodians of the cultures and traditions of their communities, some of which promoted high rates of disadvantages to children and girls in particular. Such attitudes, cultures, traditions had also blocked the inception on modern ideas that would bring education and development into such areas. So Elghana was formed to directely target these leaders and work closely with them to bring them a correct identification of the roots causes of the problesm in the societies and develop solutions in a partnership and respectful way so their pride is not touched, thus win their full participation in carrying on with reforms and plans
Teenage pregnancy, lack of sex education, wide spread of communicable diseases, lack of proper toilet facilities, poor sanitation, high rate of HIV/Aids, lack of health posts, lack of schools, and lack of alternative forms of employment as members of these communities lost their lands to mineral companies or private developers have worsened and troubled the rather siren and cozy living seen in many of these places years past.
Due to difficulty in paying staff, people already working in his office were asked to volunteer their time to support this good initiative. One staff worth mentioning in the history of Elghana has claimed anonimity. He has sacrificed time and opportunities and have stayed and worked with Elghana up to date, so are others also worht mentioning.
Durburs, forums, video screening of documentaries were highly used. The staff who dedicated their time to volunteer to make the organization work triggered the interest of Dr Prempeh to include students who interned at his firm in this activities as part of their internships.
So Elghana worked its way through many communities and created awareness, brought leaderships together and worked through identification of root problems and recommendation of solutions. We aggresively pursued many positive reforms and when the results began to show, Inviation was extended to Elghana to serve in many communities and with many other local organizations in the primary areas of interest.
Lovely as the work was, staffing was a constant challenge and funding activities was becoming difficult since ELghana was not and to date has never taken funds from any third party for any of its projects and activities but mainly from the consultancy firm of Dr Agyeman Prempeh and the sacrifices of staff and interns volunteering their time to use their skills and training in carrying out the various solution plans for various communities.
In 2004, the idea to utilise the energies and skills of foreign travellers came up. Elghana therefore drafted a plan to make the various works attractive and also beneficial to foreign students, young professionals and travellers in general who have skills and potentials to work with us. So the volunteer/intern abroad programs was established to recruit volunteers to be the powerhouse of our works so the cost of staffing become well contained.
Our Achievements
As of now, we have attracted hundreds of volunteers from all over the world, running into over a thousand who have not only deligently and passionate served to help us bring about changes, but have also had the opportunity to satisfy their innerself of making a difference, putting their skills into use where they are truly needed, gaining deepened experience for both career and cultures. Involvement of many international participants, particularly from developed nations have also helped people appreciate the opportunities they have and how worthy it is to protect and develop on it, as well as understand the core foundamentals of the challenges on people living in abject poverty and broken down communities.
We have funded the education and support of close to half a million children in Africa through our work with community based organizations, rural schools, child rights oganizations and orphanages.
Ou works have played an effective role in cutting down the spread of HIV/AIDS, reforming demeaning cultural practices, cutting down unwanted pregnancies, early detection of diseases and basic preventive measures as well as making health care accessible to many through increasing the staffing at highly challenges areas with our volunteers.
We are recipient of different awards and recognitions from states and communities and we are proud to look into the future doing more wonderful things. Together with you, we create the magic we dream about.
Surely Elghana is Exchanging positive values between the inspired and the underprivileged
